Business leaders of Iceland oppose ONP. This open letter published on April 4th and May 2nd, 2024 has been signed by more than 97 business leaders.
Iceland’s identity is inseparable from it location and natural resources. From the geologic majesty of thermal waters and volcanoes, to its spectacular northern lights, and all its wildlife in between, Iceland is unique to every other nation on Earth.
Modern day Iceland is nation of independent people who believe in self-determination. Our nation was forged an instinct for ndependence. We should never be adversely affected by foreign interests.
We encourage the world to visit, enjoy and invest responsibly in this great land. but no to take. We cannot allow foreign businesses to take more from our heritage and our people than they give.
Sustainability must be at the core of everything we do. The future requires that all business plans be sustainable and capable of leaving things in better shape for the next generation.
Our island economy requires long-term thinking and planning. All resources are precious, but and island economy must be vigilant in protecting what it has.
This year’s Icelandic Aquaculture Bill will regulate Open Net Pen farming which violates all the principles stated above. These farms are majority owned by Norwegian companies who pay minimal taxes and make maximum impact on our natural resources and sovereignty.
The practice of Open Net Pen farming is unsustainable, toxic to the environment, and eradicates local wild fish populations, We call upon our Legislators and Ministers to phase out Open Net Farming going forward. We are determined to set a sustainable fate for Iceland.
Signed Sincerely.
